HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 4 (ACN) The over 10,600 schools of all level of education, including dozens of universities, opened their classrooms today to receive over 1.8 million children and youngsters for this new school year.

Cruise Ships to Expand at Maria la Gorda

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, October 11. — The President of Viajes Cuba, Jose Manuel Bisbe York, highlighted on Wednesday in Pinar del Rio the importance of expanding cruise ships at the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, located in the country’s most western region marked with beauty and virginity.

In statements to the press, he said that there is a high demand of this tourism modality at Maria la Gorda beach in the previous six stages and there is experience and major availability of resources to guarantee a pleasant stay in that region with quality services to visitors.

The contact was held after the conclusion of a meeting in which preparations for the upcoming period was analyzed, headed by Commander of the Rebel Army, Julio Camacho Aguilera, member of the Central Committee and Director of the Guanahacabibes Comprehensive Development Office (ODIG), which coordinates the actions in the beautiful peninsula and unexpected legends.

The General Director of Cubanacan Travel, Mercedes Abreu Mesa, said that current ships visiting the region repeat their visits while others are joining in for the first time. The visitors will have different options like the Footsteps of Tobacco, hiking, bike trips and other initiatives.

The Footsteps of the Honey, she said, is an attraction in Guanahacabibes that has not been promoted much and we are expecting to slowly insert the project in the region.

She said that Viajes Cuba reported 89 docks last year with over 30 ships, among them cruises, mega yachts, and other small and medium size vessels some with over 900 passengers and the challenge is to increase in the upcoming season.

The specialist explained that this type of tourism is not complicated; leaves good earnings for the country and generally, the visitors are older adults.

She referred to the importance to achieve attracting mega yachts and cruisers that depart from Tampa to make it easy to reach the region and it becomes a terminal for those vessels.

During the meeting, the specialists discussed ways to guarantee the conservation of nature and safety of the travelers.

Colonial Art Museum: 50 Years in Defense of Heritage

SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Oct 10 (acn) The Colonial Art Museum, first institution of its type created in the center of the island is celebrating half a century on Tuesday with a broad program of activities which includes an exchange of decorative arts among several provinces.

The program of activities has been intense focused in getting the younger generation to appreciate one of the most significant installations in the city due to the architectural values and rich collection treasured in the center.

In statements to ACN, Marta Cuellar, Director of the installation, which was constructed in the 18th century in the heart of the villa, said that one of the main activities of the birthday celebration is an exchange with specialists in other territories on the process of decorative arts.

According to Cuellar, this center had some challenges in its conservation that took place last May and was also directed in the specialization of those that will protect the precious pieces.

Gloria Santos, specialist of the Vice President of the Museums of the National Council of Cultural Heritage, said that the collections are complex because one must become an expert of the art work in order to understand them and place them in the right space.

She said that due to its value, many identify the decorative art with good taste, beauty, so the specialist must be prepared to take care of the pieces.

Santos Luna said that they have seen the organization and seriousness that has characterized the work of the museum in Sancti Spiritus but also other experiences underway in Villa Clara with a catalog of verses that can attract more people.

A presentation of artists, designers and artisans got together Tuesday night at the Serafin Sanchez Valdivia park to present some of the most genuine collection of the installation like clothes, traditional tropical fans, stain glass windows, lamps and musical instruments.

The Museum of Colonial Art in Sancti Spiritus opened to the public on October 10th, 1967 is one of the centers linked to the community and among its valuable objects is its exquisite chinaware and its furniture.

Cuba announces Teams to the Central American and Caribbean Games Judo Qualifiers

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 3 (acn) The Cuban women's and men's teams that will attend the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games judo qualifying tournament, to be held next October 28th and 29th in the Dominican Republic, will be led by Kaliema Antomarchi (78 kg) and Alex Garcia (+100).
Rafael Manso, national commissioner of that sport, told ACN that nine other judokas who attended the last World Championship in Hungary will now be present in the DR under the direction of Julio Alderete and Felix Portuondo, head coaches of the men´s and women´s squads, respectively.
The list includes the men Osniel Solis (66), Magdiel Estrada (73), Jorge Martinez (81), Ivan Silva (90) and Andy Granda (100), and women Melissa Hurtado (48), Analidis Dorvigni 57), Maylin del Toro (63) and Eliani Aguilar (+78), he said.
Meanwhile, the newcomers are Harold Torres (55), Roberto Almenares (60), Yarisley Ponciano (44), Yurisleidis Hernandez (52) and Olga Masferrer (70).
Cuba´s purpose is to get tickets in all divisions for the aforementioned championship, with the aim of repeating the dominance achieved in individual and team events in the previous edition of Veracruz 2014.

Cuban Baseball: Granma and Sancti Spiritus took Important Step to advance to 2nd Stage

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 5 (acn) Granma, current monarch, and Sancti Spiritus won their respective suspended games yesterday and took a firm step in their aspirations to be included among the four teams involved in the playoffs to the second phase of the 57th Cuban National Baseball Series.
Granma defeated away Holguín 19-13 with a powerful offensive of 14 hits, including home runs by 1B Guillermo Aviles, his eighth in the tournament, and 2B Marcos Fonseca.
Aviles was the best batter of the winners when hitting 2 for 3, with homerun, six RBIs and three runs scored.
Thus, Granma totals 21 wins with 16 losses and appear sixth in the standings, half a game behind Artemisa, who ranks 5th.
Meanwhile, Sancti Spiritus beat 7-4 Matanzas, with offensive of 13 hits and highlight for SS Orlando Acebey, who hit 3 for 4, with a double and three RBIs.
Yoen Socarras took the win when allowing only two hits in seven innings, while the loss went to Jonder Martinez, who surrendered nine hits in 5.1 innings.
With this victory, Sancti Spíritus remained in the seventh spot, with balance of 21 wins and 18 losses.
The ninth subseries, which couldn´t be played due to Hurricane Irma, will start today with a double header program in all cases.
The four best teams will directly advance to the second stage of the tournament, while the sides ranking from 5th to 8th will play between them the wild card playoffs which grant two tickets to the decisive phase.

Seven Cubans to play in Professional Volleyball Leagues

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 5 (acn) Six Cuban volleyball players signed contracts to play in the 2017-2018 professional season in Argentina.
Outside hitter Osniel Melgarejo, opposite hitter Dariel Albo and middle blocker Livan Osoria were hired by the club Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero; outside hitter Miguel Angel Lopez and setter Adrian Goide will play for the Neuquen Gigantes del Sur, and outside hitter Javier Jimenez will be in the ranks of the Obras de San Juan, squad where Osoria played last season.
Ariel Sainz, head of the Cuban Volleyball Federation, told ACN that the boys will come to Cuba at the end of the first stage of the Argentine league, in mid-December, to attend the NORCECA men's world championship qualifying repechage tournament, to be held in Havana from January 5 to 7, 2018, and one day later they will return to the South American country.
A seventh Cuban player, opposite hitter Miguel David Gutierrez, will sign a contract today to play for the Porto Ravenna Volley, club belonging to the prestigious Italian League.
«The players are physically and mentally prepared to face this challenge and the intention is always to keep our main players in scenarios that project them to top-level clubs», Sainz said.

Las Tunas´ Civil could be one of the Managers in Cuba’s All-Star Baseball Game

LAS TUNAS, Cuba, Oct 11 (acn) Pablo Civil, manager of Las Tunas, said that being chosen as head coach of the Eastern team in the All-Star Game of the 57th Cuban National Baseball Series would be a high honor and a very important moment in his sports career.
Civil told ACN that there are possibilities of being in charge of the Eastern squad due to the performance of his side in the current season, but he prefers to wait for the decision of the National Baseball Commission.
When there are only three games left (two with Artemisa and one with Industriales) to cover all the entire schedule of the qualifying stage, Las Tunas appears second in the standings, 1.5 games behind Industriales, and 3 and 3,5 ahead of Pinar del Rio and Matanzas, respectively.
Six players of Las Tunas were chosen to be part of the Eastern side and the list includes pitchers Yoalkis Cruz, Yudiel Rodriguez and Yosbel Alarcon, catcher Yosvani Alarcon, 1B Rafael Viñales and outfielder Jorge Jhonson.

Cuban Stevens to attend his 5th World Archery Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 11 (acn) With 25 years devoted to archery, Juan Carlos Stevens will attend his fifth World Championship of that sport, which will be hosted by Mexico from October 15 to 22, contest which will also be attended by three other Cubans.
During a practice session, Stevens told ACN that they are already in the precompetitive stage, in which they are implementing team and individual strategies for that major tournament.
On the possibility that Cuba will compete with a complete squad, something that has not happened since 1999, he assured that it is a very positive step to have the opportunity to share with two athletes of international level such as Adrian Puentes and Hugo Franco.
Stevens, 49, won seven crowns at Central American and Caribbean Games, in addition to silver and bronze medals in Rio 2007 and Guadalajara 2011 Pan-American Games, respectively, but his major achievement was the fifth seat he earned in Beijing 2008 Olympics.
