Cuban Duos debut winning in Beach Volleyball World Tour

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 12 (acn) The Cuban duos of Sergio Gonzalez-Nivaldo Diaz and Leila Martinez-Lidiannis Echeverria won their respective matches in the second day of the 21st stop of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, based in Quinzhou, China.
Gonzalez and Diaz, who appear 18th in the men´s world ranking, beat 2-0 (21-13 and 21-16) Turkish Giginoglu-Mermer (125) in only 33 minutes.
Meanwhile, the women´s pair of Martinez and Echeverria (46) won 2-0 (21-15 and 29-27) over New Zealanders Alice Bain and Julia Tilley (64) in 40 minutes, according to the official website of the contest.
Cuba´s contenders in the round of 16 will be the Belarusian duet Dziadkou-Kavalenka (52) and the Americans Fendrick and Branagh, who debut as couple in this tournament, in the men's and women's events respectively.
In this major competition, Gonzalez-Diaz and Martinez-Echeverria aim to gain points for the world and NORCECA rankings, as well as continue their preparation focused on the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Iberoarte Opens its Doors in Holguin

The Iberoarte 2017 Artisan’s Fair opened its doors on Friday in Expo-Holguin Center in that eastern city with the participation of exhibitors from 10 countries which will run until October 29th.

Artisans from Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, India, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil and Spain will be participating in the exhibition with vases, bags and traditional costumes, like ponchos used by the indigenous population to protect themselves from the cold.

Handbags, shoes, bracelets, necklaces and mirrors, furniture and wooden pieces will complete the colorful exhibition and will be part of the activities for the Ibero-Americna year of Arts and Crafts.

Yamile Escalona, member of the Organizing Committee, told ACN that the Fair will have collateral cultural and recreational options among them expositions, fashion show, talks and children’s workshops.

Iberoarte is held each year since 2001 in the Cuban city of Holguin and shares its activities with the Ibero-American Culture Fiesta, a gathering of the region’s ancestral traditions.

Cuban Duo wins Bronze Medal in Beach Volleyball World Tour

The Cuban men´s duo of Sergio Gonzalez and Nivaldo Diaz earned a bronze medal in the Chinese city of Quinzhou, home of the 21st stop of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour when defeating the Belgian pair of Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle, who appear 12 th in the world ranking.
According to the official website of the tournament, Gonzalez and Diaz, fifth seat at Rio 2016 Olympics, won 2-1 (16-21, 21-16 and 21-11).
With this result, the Cuban couple climbed two seats in the global list and now appears 16th.
Its performance this year includes a gold medal won at the Langkawi stop, in Malaysia; the fifth spot reached in Xiamen, China, and the 17th seats in the contests of Rio de Janeiro and Moscow.
Cuba was also represented in Quinzhou by the women´s duo of Leila Martinez and Lidiannis Echeverria, who debuted at this level and were eliminated in the round of 16, with balance of a win and a loss.

Cuban elected new secretary of WFTU for Latin America

Cuban Ernesto Freire was appointed secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) for Latin America and the Caribbean by agreement of the Presidential Council of that organization, reported Trabajadores newspaper.

Freire, who served as head of the International Relations Department of the Cuban Workers' Confederation (CTC), replaces Ramón Cardona, whose work was recognized during the cremony, held at the headquarters of the WFTU in Havana.

According to the newspaper, the secretary general of the WFTU, the Greek George Mavrikos, expressed his appreciation to Cardona for giving the Federation a high prestige among the world's working institutions.

Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, a member of the Cuban Communist Party Political Bureau and secretary general of the CTC, also highlighted the work of Cardona, who fulfilled with love and sacrifice the missions related to the defense of the interests of the working class, he said.

During the ceremony, the new secretary of the WFTU for the Americas promised to continue the steps of his predecessor in the struggle for unity and to fulfill the objectives for which the WFTU was created.

Freire, among other responsibilities, held the position of member of the Secretariat of the National Union of Civilians of Defense, Secretary General of the Communications Union, CTC in the Cuban capital and in the former province of Havana.
