Cuban elected new secretary of WFTU for Latin America

Cuban Ernesto Freire was appointed secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) for Latin America and the Caribbean by agreement of the Presidential Council of that organization, reported Trabajadores newspaper.

Freire, who served as head of the International Relations Department of the Cuban Workers' Confederation (CTC), replaces Ramón Cardona, whose work was recognized during the cremony, held at the headquarters of the WFTU in Havana.

According to the newspaper, the secretary general of the WFTU, the Greek George Mavrikos, expressed his appreciation to Cardona for giving the Federation a high prestige among the world's working institutions.

Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, a member of the Cuban Communist Party Political Bureau and secretary general of the CTC, also highlighted the work of Cardona, who fulfilled with love and sacrifice the missions related to the defense of the interests of the working class, he said.

During the ceremony, the new secretary of the WFTU for the Americas promised to continue the steps of his predecessor in the struggle for unity and to fulfill the objectives for which the WFTU was created.

Freire, among other responsibilities, held the position of member of the Secretariat of the National Union of Civilians of Defense, Secretary General of the Communications Union, CTC in the Cuban capital and in the former province of Havana.
