HAVANA, Cuba, October 12.— Cuba called on the United Nations on Thursday to make a real commitment to the goal of eradicating poverty on the planet, a phenomenon that plagues hundreds of millions of human beings, Prensa Latina reported.
During the Second Committee of the General Assembly, Cuban diplomat Juan Miguel González warned that this objective will remain a chimera under the current international economic order, which he described as deeply unjust and unsustainable.
He also questioned the multi-million dollar military expenditures, which could be used to advance the peoples, and increased protectionist practices in trade by the powerful, and their failure to pledge official development assistance.
How can we achieve in this scenario the commitment to leave no one behind and finally eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions?, he asked in the continuation of the debate of the Second Committee, which deals with economic and financial matters.
According to González, only solidarity and cooperation can change the course of a world where more than 80 percent of the population survives on less than a dollar a day, almost one billion people deal with extreme poverty, 815 million suffer from chronic hunger and a similar number cannot read or write.
The Cuban official reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to keep its aid to other peoples of the South, within its possibilities and despite the validity of the blockade that has imposed the United States over the island-nation for over 55 years.
