HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 3 (ACN) - Cuba and Gambia renewed a decades-old cooperation agreement in the health field, which provides Cuban medical assistance to the people of that African country.
The updated agreement was signed at the headquarters of the Gambian Ministry of Health by its minister, Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, and the Cuban ambassador to that nation, Ruben G. Abelenda.
After the signing, held in the presence of the head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Gambia, Anaris Marta Odio, and local officials, Samateh and Abelenda praised the renewal of the agreement.
The beginning of Cuban medical cooperation in Gambia started on June 1996, when 38 collaborators arrived in Banjul as Technical Assistance.
Three years later, in 1999, the Integrated Health Program was implemented in that country, the first African nation to do so, with more than 150 collaborators.
That same year, at the initiative of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the Gambian School of Medicine was created, also the first in that continent, which is still functioning with the support of Cuban professors.

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 30 (ACN) - Sri Lankan FM Dinesh Gunawardena participated in the celebration of the 61st anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, held at the Cuban Embassy to that country.
Susil Premajayanta, State Minister and Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Cuba, was also present. On behalf of the government and the Cuban Solidarity Movement, he stressed the historical ties of friendship between the two countries and rejected the blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
For her part, Cuban ambassador Juana Elena Ramos explained the measures taken by the U.S. government to try to choke the Cuban economy, such as the flight ban and the persecution of ships carrying fuel to Cuba, and the campaign against the Caribbean island's medical collaboration with other world nations, among other aggressions.
Ramos stated that in spite of this, Cuba has made progress on several economic fields and thanked Sri Lanka for its support to the Cuban resolution against the blockade, which was approved again at the UN General Assembly.
The meeting was also attended by the Sri Lankan delegation that attended the Regional Conference on Solidarity with Cuba held in Nepal last July, as well as other members of parliament and the cabinet, leaders of several political parties, members of Friendship Associations and Graduates in Cuba and Cubans living in that country.

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 30 (ACN) - The president of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, mourned today the death of Brigadier General and Hero of the Republic, Harry Villegas.
"The Hero of the Republic of Cuba Harry Villegas died. Our heartfelt condolences," Diaz-Canel said on Twitter.
Villegas (1940-2019), also known as Pombo, distinguished himself in the fight against Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship. In 1957 he joined the insurrectional struggle under Che's command and was part of the invading column number eight because of his bravery and sacrifice attitude.
His internationalist work was active as he participated in the military missions along with Che, in Congo and Bolivia, where he showed daring and determination, as well as in Angola. He was appointed brigadier general in 1994.
His life and work is an example of humility, honesty and unlimited loyalty to Che, Fidel and Raul Castro.

HAVANA, Dec 2 (ACN) Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will make an official visit to Cuba from next December 4.
The distinguished visitor will hold official conversations with Cuban authorities and will carry out other activities.
UNESCO's goal is to guide people in a more effective management of their own development, through natural resources and cultural values, aimed at modernizing and advancing the world's nations, without losing identity and cultural diversity.
Its current Director-General, who took office on November 15, 2017, is a senior French official and politician, cultural advisor to President Francois Hollande (2014-2016) and Minister of Culture and Communication from 2016 to 2017.

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov. 14 (ACN) Current trends in conflict management and resolution will focus the debates of jurists, academics and legal professionals at the International Law Congress 2019, to be held from Nov. 20-22 at the Havana Convention Center.
According to members of the event's organizing committee, a press conference confirmed the participation of more than 1.300 delegates, including representatives from Spain, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Chile.
The attendance of professors from different universities who will deliver master lectures on current issues, such as the role of the Cuban lawyer in the face of the challenges imposed by the legislative changes arising from the approval of the new Constitution of the Republic.
A special moment will be the pre-congress class, from November 17 to 19, entitled International Negotiations, Ways for Business Development, aimed at training Cuban professionals who assist such entities in sectors of the national economy.
In parallel to the conferences, the course includes case simulation with practical exercises and exchanges of experiences among jurists.
The congress will also include an expository fair of the different institutions of the Cuban legal sector, where more than twenty titles on Law and other subjects associated with the event can be acquired.

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 16 (ACN) The Vice President of the Council of Ministers, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, held talks on Friday morning with the Director General of the Kuwait Fund for International Development, Adbulwabab Al Kadel.
Both parties highlighted the relations between the Kuwaiti Fund and Cuba and the Fund's support for the country's different economic development programs and policies by 2030, such as the Water Loss Elimination Program and the change in the country's energy matrix, among others.
Likewise, a Loan Agreement was signed for the financing of the project ″ Rehabilitation and completion of the networks of aqueduct, sewerage and storm drainage in eastern Havana (Phase II)", a step prior to the signing of the Loan Agreement that is estimated to materialize in the first months of 2020, covered by a credit of 27.5 million U.S. dollars, which gives continuity to the work done in Phase I.
Cabrisas reiterated Cuba's interest in continuing to work with the Fund on national projects.
The Director General of the Fund makes an official visit to Cuba on the occasion of the 500th anniversary celebrations in Havana.
Dr. Adbulwab Al Kadel was accompanied by Mr. Abdullah Al Saqer, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mr. Talal Sultan Al Sultan, Head of the Promotion Division and His Excellency the Ambassador of Kuwait to Cuba, Mohammad Fadel Khalaf.
On the Cuban side, Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez, president of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, also participated.

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov. 16 (ACN) The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, sent congratulatory messages to King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen on the occasion of the National Day of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Cubaminrex reported on Friday.
According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cuban president's congratulations coincided with the 66th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the Cambodian people from France on November 9.
The Cambodian nation, with a population of some 16 million and a territory of 181.000 square kilometers, established diplomatic relations with Cuba on April 15, 1960, based on respect, exchange and cooperation.

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 17 (ACN) The First Secretary of the Communist Party Raul Castro and the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, received on Saturday afternoon the President of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Her Excellency Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko, who is visiting Cuba as head of the delegation of Russian parliamentarians participating in the celebrations for the 500th Anniversary of Havana.
Both parties exchanged on the excellent existing relations between Cuba and the Russian Federation, and ratified the will to continue developing them in the sectors of common interest, including the parliamentarian. The Cuban leaders thanked the firm position of the Russian Senate against the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.
Accompanying the distinguished visitor was Andrei Guskov, ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cuba; Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Council of the Russian Federation; and other Russian officials.

HAVANA, Oct 31 (ACN) Strange cobwebs have been hanging for a few days on Havana´s Galiano Street, officially Italia Avenue, with the constant question of what they will be.
What seemed to be nothing but wires and careless light bulbs during the day, last night unveiled huge constellations that illuminated the entire road.
Galiano Street then welcomes with a new image the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, with a light show donated by the city of Turin to celebrate this anniversary.
The general astonishment occurred minutes after the cannon fire, when only seconds were enough for the yellow, blue and white spotlights to form the starry shapes of the night.
The crowd then had the opportunity to pose in front of Orion's Belt, the Big or the Little Dipper, without the need to reach the sky, and the floodlights were the scene of hundreds of people from Havana and visitors who witnessed this unique event in Cuba.
Havana is dressed up to receive its 500 years and Galiano Street accompanies it with a renewed nocturnal image.

HAVANA, Nov 4 (ACN) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel attended today the opening of the 37th edition of the Havana International Fair, FIHAV 2019, held at Expocuba fairgrounds, in Havana.
He was accompanied by the vice president of the Council of Ministers, Ricardo Cabrisas; the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, and other members of the Cuban Government and businessmen.
More than 55 countries attend the fair which will run until next Friday.
